The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 has launched in China, and it's made significant improvements in thickness, weight, and battery life.
Xiaomi today unveiled the MIX Fold 4, the company's fourth-generation book-style foldable. Compared to the previous generation, Xiaomi touts that it has made "significant breakthoughs" in terms of design. Here's everything you need to know about the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4.
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 features Xiaomi's second-generation proprietary hinge, which the company says has enabled a "remarkable weight reduction." The total hinge volume, for example, has been reduced by 34%. Overall, the MIX Fold 4 has an unfolded thickness of just 4.59mm, a folded thickness of 9.47mm, and a total weight of just 226g.
The hinge is also more reliable, Xiaomi says, as they've paired high-strength materials (1800Mpa ultra-strong steel) with a wear-resistant carbon ceramic steel transmission mechanism. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 adopts an "all-carbon architecture," which means that the hinge floating plate, display backing plate, and middle plate battery component are all "precision-molded from T800H carbon fiber material." This not only enhances the overall strength and durability but also "considerably" reduces the weight. Xiaomi says the hinge has a lifespan of 500,000 folds.
Xiaomi's manufacturing process for creating its foldables has also improved. The company says its "three-layer, five-surface" motherboard design, combined with large-area tin spraying technology, allows for high-precision soldering, improving the circuit stability and reliability. And the application of 3D-shaped battery technology and stacking process utilizes "irregular space" in the motherboard COP packing area, enabling an increase in battery capacity by 260mAh to 5100mAh.
The 5100mAh battery features "silicon-carbon anode" technology, which enhances energy density. Xiaomi's Surge battery management system controls charging and discharging, which the company says will prolong battery life, even with the phone's fast 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. Plus, the display's "E7 luminous material" and "Pol-less Plus" technology will reduce its power consumption.
Under the hood, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It's cooled by an "innovative 3D cooling system" which measures 11,912 square millimeters and which uses an "advanced" vapor chamber technology to evenly dissipate heat through multiple layers of graphite. Combined, Xiaomi says the MIX Fold 4 should be able to sustain good performance under high levels of load.
In terms of connectivity, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is equipped with "four industry-leading low-frequency receiving antennas and four Xiaomi Surge T1 signal enhancement chips." These are "deeply integrated" with HyperOS' network subsystem to improve communication regardless of where or how you hold the phone. Furthermore, the MIX Fold 4 supports two-way satellite communication and supports "mainstream global communication bands" and a "Travel Assistant" feature to help travelers get to their destination.
The inner display of the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is a 7.98-inch Samsung E7 LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 2488x2244. It supports a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, HDR10+ content, and Dolby Vision content. As mentioned before, it uses an "advanced Pol-less Plus" technology that enhances brightness and color performance while reducing power consumption. The inner display is protected by a later of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG).
The outer display, meanwhile, is a 6.56-inch C8+ panel with a resolution of 2520x1080. It also supports refresh rates up to 120Hz and Dolby Vision content. It's protected by a layer of Xiaomi's proprietary Shield Glass.
The MIX Fold 4 features a quad-camera system, all of which have Leica lenses. The main camera uses a 50MP "Light Fusion 800" high dynamic range sensor with "Dual Native ISO Fusion Max" technology, which Xiaomi says provides more accurate color reproduction and better detail retention in high-contrast scenes. It's joined by a 12MP ultra wide-angle lens with a 120 degree field-of-view, a 50MP Leica "floating telephoto lens" that delivers "excellent portrait effects and macro photography capabilities," and finally, by a 115mm Leica ultra (5X) telephoto lens.
Xiaomi's AISP, which is backed by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and HyperOS models, supports complex imaging scenarios such as "Master Portrait," which uses a PortraitLM trained on data from real-life photographers. Xiaomi says its "Master Portrait" mode offers a look that's "a little more ideal than reality" but without actually deviating from reality.
On that front, the MIX Fold 4 continues the company's trend of using Leica's natural color science and classic tones, as well as avoiding "excessive sharpening and algorithms." A Leica authentic and vibrant mode are offered to users in the camera app. Plus, thanks to the book-style form factor, the MIX Fold 4 allows for hands-free "hover" selfies and external display framing when unfolded.
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 will be available in White, Black, Blue, and Xiaomi composite fiber editions. It'll be available in China, though there's no word yet on international availability.
The MIX Fold 4 starts at 8,999 Yuan for the 12+256GB model, costs 9,999 Yuan for the 16+512GB model, and goes up to 10,999 Yuan for the highest-end 16+1TB model.
